Larger than our 4x3x18 compact bag, smaller than our large-format 10x5x24 — this is the workhorse size for standard grain spawn batches and medium sawdust blocks, running a 0.2 micron filter for operations where contamination control is the top priority.
Why 0.2 Micron on an 8x5x20?
The 0.2 micron filter gives this mid-size bag a meaningful advantage in environments without a laminar flow hood, in multi-cultivar operations where cross-contamination is a concern, or for species that are particularly susceptible to trichoderma and other green molds. You get the capacity for a proper 2–4 lb substrate load without compromising on contamination resistance.
If your environment is well-controlled (flow hood, clean room) and you prioritize colonization speed, the same 8x5x20 size may perform better with our 0.5 micron filter bags. For liquid culture inoculation without opening the bag, consider our 8x5x20 injection port version.

Inoculation Method
This bag does not have an injection port. Inoculate via:

Self-healing needle injection — 3 MIL polypropylene is self-healing; insert a needle through the bag wall in a still air box or under a flow hood

Open-top inoculation — briefly open the heat-sealed top in a SAB or flow hood, inoculate, and re-seal

Grain-to-grain transfer — open in a still air box and transfer colonized grain directly

Sterilization Notes
- Wrap filter patch in aluminum foil before autoclaving
- Sterilize at 15 PSI / 121°C — minimum 2.5 hours for grain, 2 hours for sawdust substrate
- Cool to room temperature before inoculating
